Why your iPhone photos are HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container). It keeps similar quality at roughly half the size of JPG, which saves storage — but Windows without an extension, many websites, upload forms and older apps cannot open it.
Converting to JPG gives you a file that opens everywhere: Windows Photos, Android, email, WhatsApp Web and every online form.
Good to know
- Photos are converted at full resolution. Choose a lower quality only if you also need a smaller file.
- Location and camera details (EXIF) are not copied into the JPG, which is better for privacy when you share photos.
- Live Photos and bursts are stored as several images; this tool converts the main still photo.
- In Safari the photo is decoded by the system itself; other browsers load a HEIC decoder the first time (about 1 MB), then it is cached.
Stop the iPhone from saving HEIC
If you always need JPG, open Settings → Camera → Formats on the iPhone and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos will be saved as JPG; existing photos stay HEIC.
How to use the HEIC to PNG Converter
- 1Drop your HEIC files into the box, click to choose them, or paste an image with Ctrl+V.
- 2PNG is already selected as the output.
- 3Click Download next to each converted file, or download them all as a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works even offline once the page has loaded.
Can I convert many HEIC files at once?
Yes. Drop or select as many files as you like; each one is converted in turn and gets its own download button, or download them all as a ZIP.
Why do iPhone photos use HEIC?
HEIC stores photos at about half the size of JPG with similar quality. Apple has used it by default since iOS 11, but Windows, many websites and older apps still need JPG.
Is my photo quality kept?
Yes. The photo is converted at full resolution. Location and camera details (EXIF) are not copied, which is better for your privacy.
