What formatting changes — and what it does not
Formatting only adds line breaks and indentation. Keys, values and their order stay exactly the same, so the formatted JSON means the same thing to any program.
- Choose 2 or 4 spaces (or tabs) to match your project style.
- If the JSON is invalid you get the line and column of the first error instead of a vague message.
- Large files are parsed in a background worker, so the page does not freeze.
How to use the JSON Formatter
- 1Paste JSON, drop a .json file, or open one from your device.
- 2Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs.
- 3Copy the result or download it as a file.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works even offline once the page has loaded.
How large a file can it handle?
Formatting runs in a background thread, so files of tens of megabytes work without freezing the page. Very large results are previewed partially and can be copied or downloaded in full.
Does it fix invalid JSON?
It shows the exact line and column of the first error so you can fix it quickly.
